My wife and I moved to Reading four years ago from Lexington where we raised our two children and lived for over 25 years.  We were drawn to Reading for its convenient location, nice neighborhoods and beautiful conservation areas for walking and hiking. But what about its school system?

Reading reminds us of Lexington years ago when we first moved there, when our priority then; like most young families, was a good school system.

While living there, the town approved many overrides that focused on supporting and investing in schools and town services. At times, the additional taxes where tough on household budgets - ours and my elderly parents, who also lived in town - but we always knew investing in the future of our children's education was our obligation. That investment would pay big dividends when our children were grown and we moved/retired. When we moved here we learned that Reading hasn’t approved an override since 2003 and recently rejected another override. Today with the current tax situation at the state and federal level pushing more and more of the burden for maintaining our schools to local townships and cities we have to make an investment in our schools and make education a core pillar of what Reading is all about  - or sadly fall into mediocrity.

From our experience, the choice is simple ... invest in our children and it will pay big dividends to our community and the value of our homes and property.
