Our family chose to move to Reading 9 years ago when our oldest daughter was about to enter first grade.  We chose Reading for its proximity to Boston and its access to the commuter rail and highways.  We also valued the reputation of its schools.  What surprised us most once we settled in was the supportive, caring community we realized we had joined.  As our children have grown and thrived in the schools and enjoyed participating in the many activities the town supports, we have come to understand what a great choice we made.

But we have noticed changes during our last few years here.  For example, some incredible teachers who helped shape and foster our older daughter’s love of learning have left for better opportunities in other communities.  She has also had to go without permanent teachers more than once when positions could not be filled.

We feel we are at a turning point and we need to decide what we want for the future of our town. While we don’t want anyone to face financial hardship, we know that supporting our services, our infrastructure, and our schools makes Reading better for every single resident.  I am quite honestly scared for our future, but I am also hopeful that the Reading community will choose to invest in that future and keep Reading the strong, wonderful town we chose 9 years ago.
